Order concerning Indian labor in the diocese of Michoacan : Huaniqueo, Michoacán : ms., 1559.

Order (3 p.) from the Viceroy of New Spain to Alonso Castillo presented by Francisco Diez, a priest of the diocese of Michoacan. Castillo is reminded of the Indians' obligation of working in a sementera (labor field) for the bishop of Michoacan, and in other fields in tribute to the Spanish crown. The order, issued in response to several protests of the Indians against the amount of work they had to do, illustrates the tensions existing between Indians and the Spanish government and how the royal officers employed forms of coercion in order to maintain the control over Indian population.
